Genesis of Mantra Japa

Sages of the past were simple, pure and innocent like small children and with a pure heart they called on the Divine Mother of the universe. They wanted to unravel the mystery of creation and its creator. They longed to realize the divine principles manifest behind this universe. They wanted to offer their sincere, heartfelt gratitude to the supreme Lord of the universe for His magnanimity in providing them with air, light and water in plenty for their survival on earth. They had a feeling of guilt for using these natural gifts for their personal use without thanking the creator. With an intense feeling of repentance and helplessness, they performed penance for years together meditating on these natural elements viz., air, light and water. At last the sages heard the eternal sound OM and saw a dazzling light.

As they went on meditating on this uncreated eternal mystic sound symbol OM, that brilliant, dazzling light took a splendid form. The sages called this shining form ‘God’. Later that shining divine being started speaking to them – “My children, I am Vishnu. I am pleased with your sincere longing. Tell me what you want” Just like a small child lisping sweetly: “Mom, how shall I make you happy?”, the sages too asked Lord Vishnu: “Oh! Lord, how can we quickly realize your grace?” Then, God Himself revealed the secret.

“My children, by repeating the eight syllabled Mantra ‘Om Namo Narayanaya’ you can quickly realize me.”

In course of time, many sages and seers were able to get the vision of various forms of God and their corresponding Mantras  through severe austerities. Even today there is a sacred rite to remember those sages with gratitude for having obtained divine Mantras for humanity.

Mantra The Divine Formula

Thus, Mantra is a divine, mystical formula revealed by God Himself to the pure hearted Rishis (sages). It is a divine boon granted by the Supreme Lord Himself so that human beings may attain self realization through its repetition. This Mantra  is a powerful aid for inner purification.
